#Happy Christmas Chums
As you were. Be about your business.
John H [e] said Aha! There you are on the attic cam. Pretending to work but probably playing some game or generally messing around.

Merry Christmas yourself, and a charming New Year. [added 27th Dec 2006]

#[Arabica]XSLT: Template matches

Just committed some changes to take me another step closer to calculating template match priorities. I'm really quite pleased with how I wiggled through that one :)

Once this is finished, I hope to be able to cut an initial release early in the new year. That would be super.

#[linkfarm] Ugandans grab 'pig-for-name' deal - Hornsleth, who on his website sometimes spells his name Horn$leth, says the scheme, offering villagers of Buteyongera aid in the form of a pig or goat if they take on his name, is a commentary on the hypocrisies of society. Well yes, but is it art?

#[Arabica]DOM: TreeWalker

Something I started but never finished years ago was DOM Traversal. I wrote a load of header files, then never did anything else. Never even looked at it. Never even thought about it, nor used an implementation in another language. Looks like I was a bit silly though, because I've had a TreeWalker implementation donated by a chap called craigp. I wrote a few basic tests for it, and it actually looks rather good. I can think of several places over the past few years were it would have been jolly useful.

In short - if you're walking a DOM, have a look at TreeWalker.

Spent a little while playing with Mingw's MSYS, which I'd not heard of before and which turns out to be rather cool. Committed some configure patchs so that Arabica builds on it properly.

   * smellygit said I saw the Throwing Muses at Edwards years ago, is that the place that burnt down recently? [added 11th Dec 2006]

It is the place, although it's not where I'd expect a band like Throwing Muses to be playing. Eee, things wert differnt in them days ... [added 11th Dec 2006]

   * John H [e] said As a young rocker from the Black Country I misspent many a Saturday night at Edwards No. 8 (as it was then known). Leather, mullets and spandex were de rigeuer - Throwing Muses, not a once. The fire was like the final nail in my overly prolonged youth. [added 12th Dec 2006]

#[linkfarm] Long the fixation of physicists worldwide, a tiny particle is found I had dinner with a physicist on Friday night. I asked him if he was the slightest bit excited about this. He said he was more interested in how cellos worked. I suggested that maybe we could smash a few cellos together to see if tiny sub-violins came flying out of the splintery wooden impact. Disappointingly, he declined.

#[linkfarm] Mutoh Keiji vs Jyushin Thunder Liger They might be 10 years older, but they've both still got it. There's a school of thought that says wrestling is pure symbolism - that a punch is just a punch. That's cobblers. The reason this match works so well is because of the reputation as a wrestling titan each man brings to the ring. The crowd undoubted knows, and the commentators are certainly selling, Mutoh's long standing and pretty serious knee problems. The whole narrative of the match is laid out around Mutoh's bad knees, and that's why everyone goes so bonkers at the finish. As far as I know they've only wrestled once previously. The whole thing is, therefore, laden with history and expectation. It's a cracker.

#[linkfarm] Six hurt as tornado hits London - Fire services have sealed six roads in a zone covering a quarter of a square mile Lasting about 30 seconds, hitting a quarter of a square mile and yet, it's second up on the Ten O'Clock News, with their "special correspondent" in a helicopter overhead. Don't remember getting that kind of treatment here. I'll bet that this time next week nobody's making "tornado did 10 millions pounds worth of improvement" jokes, either.

#[linkfarm] NASA Images Suggest Water Still Flows in Brief Spurts on Mars Often when you read stuff like this the word "recent" means some time in the last few thousand years - that is recent on a geological scale. Here, recent means in the last 5 years. Wow. 15 years ago I was at a lecture on Martian geology where the phrase "God forbid, free water" was used when talking about the causes of some geological features. This is a pretty significant find.

#[linkfarm] When Mr. Self recently traveled to New York, however, he did not take a taxi from his house in South London to Heathrow. He walked the whole 26 miles. Upon arriving in New York, he walked from Kennedy Airport to the nearby Crowne Plaza Hotel Time was I thought Will Self was an insufferable pompous tosser. Over the years, he's won me over and I feel rather fondly towards him now. Even if he is still a bit pompous.

#[Arabica]XSLT: xsl:namespace-alias

Watching December to Dismember. Team Extreme have just won the overlong curtain jerker against MNM. I just committed initial support for xsl:namespace-alias. It doesn't work properly in the face of xsl:imports yet, nor does it do anything with attributes in namespaces. The main bits work though. Now it's time for Matt Striker vs. Balls Mahoney. Yay.

Wrestling wasn't quite what I was hoping for - ECW really is being mishandled. Attributes in namespaces are now remapped correctly. Had a crack at #default too, although it's not quite there yet. [added 4th Dec 2006]
