Famous hacker Kevin Mitnick gets hacked - Mitnick said Monday that the hackers apparently exploited separate flaws in Internet server software from Microsoft Corp. The person responsible for the company's Web site failed to apply the repairing patches available from Microsoft, Mitnick said.
Sounds like a poor cover-up excuse to me. Mitnick probably wrote the server himself in DEC assember, scratching it into the wall of his cell with a sharpened spoon.

We reboxed it all and carted it round to stash in John's garage until after the move. For the avoidance of later confusion I labelled the boxes. Writing CRAP on the greater part of your comics collection actually turns out to be quite liberating. ajbattrick said Feel free to, erm, throw old spare P100's and their ilk this way if you like if you're clearing out prior to move. I'm sure a man like you has many old boxes with dust on lying around. I know I do and I'm only 23.

My
other concern sells software for working with
XML. That XML thing, it's
the way of the future I tell you. Anyway, we profess to support standards and stuff, because they're generally a good thing, so I thought I would migrate our website from the manky
HTML that Dreamweaver produces (or at least it does when Frazer's driving) to lovely
Colin-approved XHTML. See that extra X? That's the inevitable march of progress. Chances are noone would notice, but if someone did then at least they'd know we'd made a bit of an effort. And anyway, it was easier that the other stuff I could be doing, but it's still a good thing™.
First off, I want to bin out the frames, so each page looks that same but is bookmarkable. Having been round the content management/document aggregation block a few times, I know that all I need to do for each page is mush three (or four or five depending on how you count) different page-bits together, and Bob will be a close relative. The some of the page-bits (generally called components) are the same across several pages, so I don't really want to make up each new page by hand. If I did that changing a menu, say, would mean editing several different files. What I need is a template that says
cram this, this and this into that. Then I crank the template through the template-machine and out pops my page. Sharper minds that mine have already been at this one, but of the millions of possible solutions I choose
XInclude. It's quick, easy and it's got a X in front.
After about three files, I start to see more patterns emerging. I have several files all called company_
something.htm which all have the same menu down the side, and other set called products_
something. My XInclude driver starts to look this

a longer list. Twist that with
another bit XSLT and I get
the instructions for turning all my page-bits into real pages. With
a tiny bit of glue to make it all happen, at last
I get my website. That
rocks! Hurrah!
Obviously I'm a trained professional, but I'd strongly encourage you all to try this kind of malarkey at home. Be warned though, this is also the path to making
a software mountain out of what should be
a molehill.

Britain's rocky road to Mars - The British-built Mars lander, Beagle 2, is about to leave home on the first leg of its journey to the Red Planet.
Just heard on the radio that it's been shipped. Am very excited about this project - lots of my old friends at the Open University are involved in Beagle2. I imagine they're having a bit of a nervous party at the moment. It's packed and ready to go, but there' still the launch and nine months to Mars followed by a bouncy landing before they find out if it's going to work. But if it does, it'll be fantastic!

Just back from taking the Bean to see the Chinese New Year celebrations in the city centre. It was a typical civic event, speeches you didn't really want to listen to (in this case
the Lord Mayor, the chair of the Festival committee, and the Secretary at
Chinese Embassy) combined with the fun stuff you were there for -
Lion dance and firecrackers. Amusingly, everyone involved in the Lion Dance - the dancers, musicians, the fellow dressed up as the laughing Buddha, the guys with the flags - were all white, not one of them was Chinese.
